A direct descendent of Mark Twain, Paul O'Neill earned All-State honors in high school in both baseball and basketball. Like most sweet-swinging lefthanded batters, Paul drew comparisons to the legendary Ted Williams in his youth. Although he once carried a .400 batting average into mid-June, it was the intensity that O'Neill brought to his at-bats, which most reminded people of the "Splendid Splinter." On the left front tail is the "Russell Athletic" label and size "48." Below this is a white patch reading "21 O'Neil 95." The numbers denote the player number and year, respectively. Across the front of the jersey is the name "New York" and on the back is the player number "21." Both the name and the number are made of blue on white tackle twill. On the left sleeve is a black tackle twill number "7" and below this is a black armband. Both commemorate the death of Mickey Mantle. The armband and number have been restored. The jersey shows game-use and with the exception of the restored armband and number "7", appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
