The most dominant defensive center in NBA history, Russell was a master at anticipating, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds that triggered the Boston Celtics' fast break. Enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1974, he was named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. Before turning pro, Russell was an All-American and National Player of the Year at San Francisco, leading the Dons to the 1955 and 1956 NCAA titles.
