Since the days of Ruth and Gehrig, the original Yankee Stadium always had open lockers. Therefore, there was no place for the players to secure their valuables. In the clubhouse was a very large safe that had compartments for all the players and coaches to safely store their money and jewelry. Each compartment was identified by a locker tag that indicated each team member's number. We were present 25 years ago at a meeting between Jonny Blanchard and Frank Prudenti, long time Yankee batboy and clubhouse attendant. They were talking about this particular safe. This lot contains the great Mickey Mantle's safe locker tag. Only the clubhouse attendants had access to open this large safe. The presented item is Mickey Mantle's compartment identifier. This bronze medallion is approximately two inches in diameter. On the front is engraved “YANKEE STADIUM LOCKER NO. 7 NEW YORK.” The medallion is in good condition with minor scratches and expected vintage aging. This is the only Mantle locker compartment safe tag that we have ever seen. Accompanied by a Yankee Bat Boy LOA.
