The 1958 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament involved 24 schools playing to determine the national champion of men's college basketball. It began on March 11, 1958, and ended with the championship game on March 22 in Louisville, Kentucky. A total of 28 games were played, including a third place game in each region and a national third place game. Kentucky, coached by Adolph Rupp, won the national title, 84-72 in the final game over Seattle. This basketball net was from that very game and is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Vernon Hatton, a Kentucky player which states, in part, “…in the 1958 Championship game, I (Vernon Hatton) scored 30 points and helped our team (Kentucky) beat Seattle. This net is from the 1958 Championship game. It was cut down during the postgame celebration and has been in my possession ever since”. It is further accompanied by a photo of Hatton wearing this very net on his head as well as a paperback book entitled “Rupp” displaying a similar photo.
