The 1967-68 season was the first for the newly formed American Basketball Association (ABA) and also that of the Pittsburgh Pipers. The Pipers had an extremely successful first season posting the best record in the regular season at 54-24. They were powered by ABA MVP and Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins who led the league with 26.8 points per game, carrying the Pipers to the first ever ABA Finals. They would go on to defeat the New Orleans Buccaneers 4 games to 3 as Hawkins earned Finals MVP honors and the Pipers won the first ever ABA Championship. The ABA title still stands as the only pro basketball championship in Pittsburgh. Below the inner rear collar is the “Rawlings” manufacturer’s tag with size “44” with a deteriorating flag tag and indecipherable double digit player number. On the left inseam are the wash instructions. Across the back reads “pipers” with the dot on the “i” being a basketball all in blue on white tackle twill with orange chain-stitch embroidery on the basketball. The shooting shirt is properly tagged, was presented to us as worn and in our opinion shows wear.
