A cult hero for Red Sox fans since his 1964 rookie season, Conigliaro suffered one of the most gruesome beanings in baseball history, a pitch that shattered his left cheekbone, dislocated his jaw and caused severe damage to his left retina. After missing the remainder of the 1967, and all of 1968, the gritty outfielder returned to Fenway for the 1969 season, hitting twenty homers with eighty-two runs batted in to earn Comeback Player of the Year honors, an award which has since been named for him personally. On the front left tail is the McAuliffe manufacturer’s tag with two box tags beneath reading the year “69” and size “44”. Across the chest reads “BOSTON” and on the back is the player number “25”. All numbering and lettering is done in navy blue on red felt. On the left sleeve is the MLB “100TH ANNIVERSARY” patch. This jersey remains all original and is a true gem. Minor baseball related staining is present on the front left tail. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows excellent use. Accompanied by a MEARS LOA grading the jersey an A9.5.
