Bud Harrelson anchored the Mets' infield for thirteen seasons, including their 1969 World Championship season and 1973 pennant-winning season. Harrelson was typical of shortstops of his era: good fielder, poor hitter. He had a lifetime .969 fielding percentage, and won a Gold Glove at his position in 1971. He was a National League All-Star in 1970 and received Most Valuable Player Award consideration. He was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1982. On the left front tail of the road flannel jersey is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “36”. Inside the rear collar is a grey strip tag with “3-36-1971” done in blue chain stitch indicating the player’s number, jersey size and year, respectively. Across the front is “NEW YORK”. The player’s number “3” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on orange tackle twill. This is the smallest baseball flannel we have ever seen. On the left sleeve is the team embroidered disc patch. Harrelson has signed the front of the shirt in blue marker adding the inscription “3 1971 METS” rating a 9. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a LOA from JSA as well as an additional LOA on NY Mets letterhead which states, in part, “please find enclosed one gray uniform shirt, number 3, which was worn by Bud Harrelson, one of the Mets you mentioned in your letter of May 31, 1973. Since we have conformed with your request, I believe this will be our last correspondence and I wish you luck with your unique collection (signed) Marino Andriani Administrative Assistant”.
