During the 1949-50 NHL season, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers in seven games to win the Stanley Cup, marking the team’s fourth championship. That year’s squad was led by the famous “Production Line” of Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel and the great Gordie Howe who finished first, second and third in scoring that season with 79, 69 and 68 points, respectively. They are all Hall of Fame greats. Easily one of the most productive lines in league history, this talented trio led the Red Wings to Stanley Cup Championships in 1950 and ‘52. Offered here is Abel’s game-used Detroit Red Wings red wool sweater worn during the team’s double-overtime, series-clinching 4-3 Game 7 victory over the Rangers in the 1950 Stanley Cup Finals. Abel, one of the very few Jewish hockey players, in fact, scored Detroit’s second goal of the game in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Inside the rear tail of this sweater is the “Tool Shop Sporting Goods Detroit” manufacturer’s tag. Across the front is the team’s embroidered and chain-stitched felt team logo crest. A considerable number of stains from game wear and what could be blood is present on the sweater number (“12”), which stretches across the back in white felt. The sweater is covered with team repairs along with unrepaired holes on the front and both sleeves. Note that Abel’s Captain’s diamond (“C”) badge has been removed from the left front chest area with the outline visibly remaining. Abel retired following the 1953-54 season and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969. In 1995, Abel's No. 12 jersey was retired and raised to the rafters in Joe Louis Arena -- fittingly between Howe's No. 9 and Lindsay's No. 7. This sweater is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows outstanding wear. The best known example of a Sid Abel jersey. Accompanied by a letter from Photo-Match.com.
