The ever reserved Roger Maris was thrust into the center of the sports world in 1961 when he went head-to-head with teammate and Yankee icon Mickey Mantle in a race to break the Babe's single season home run record. On 10/1/61, a packed Yankee stadium looked on as Maris came to the plate in the fourth inning and smashed his 61st over the short porch in right. This 8" x 10" black and white AP Wirephoto shows the technically sound follow-through of Maris' swing as he hits the 61st homer. The photo has been signed and inscribed, "...Happy things are working out for you - Keep up the good work as you are a good friend - Best Wishes Roger Maris". The signature has been done in blue marker and is easily a near 10. The signature comes with a letter from PSA/DNA.
