By the early 1970s many aspects of Yankee Stadium had fallen into disrepair and there were talks of moving the team to New Jersey and building a new ballpark. The stadium was saved when Mayor John Lindsay bought it for $24 million in 1972, the same year George Steinbrenner became owner. After playing in Shea Stadium for two seasons, the Yankees reopened on April 15, 1976. This seat is an original wooden Yankee Stadium seat removed from the park during renovations. The seat has since been repainted blue and has a gold plate reading, "Yankee Stadium "The House That Ruth Built" -50th- Anniversary 1923-1973 Bronx, N.Y." The chair is in very good overall condition.
