Founded in 1901, Toledo Scale is among the most recognized brand names of the 20th century. By the mid-20s the familiar gold lacquer of food store scales was giving way to white porcelain, and Toledo Scale organized a porcelain enamel subsidiary to assure a high quality product. In fact, Toledo Dynamometer Scales were used to measure the torque of giant airplane engines during WWII. This beautiful vintage example features Toledo's unique "No Springs, Honest Weight" design. It stands 30" tall, the white porcelain finish shows some wear. Behind the scale plate, a portion of the glass enclosed mechanism is visible. On the top are four magnifying lenses for reading the back-lit weight, behind which is a large cylindrical drum with hundreds of weight gradients stamped in. The back of the cylinder has a removable plate where the lightbulb attaches, which is currently detached. The scale mechanism and gears are intact, and it appears to be functional. Shipping will be expensive for this item, as it is extremely heavy.
