1978 marked the 75th Anniversary of the Fall Classic and brought together the two rivals who had played in the previous World Series, the Yankees and the Dodgers. The rivalry dated back to the Dodgers' days in Brooklyn, when they were the Yanks' crosstown rivals. The Yankees had beaten the Dodgers in the 1977 World Series 4-2 to win their first championship since 1962, a feat which they would repeat in the 1978 rematch. It was the first World Series rematch since the Yankees and Braves in 1957 and 1958. The Yankees were understandably tired after battling the Red Sox for first place all season, culminating in a thrilling one game playoff on October 2. The Bronx Bombers dropped the first two at Dodger Stadium. Returning to New York, Ron Guidry, who had beat the Sox for his 25th win in the playoff game, held the Dodgers to one run in Game Three to begin the comeback. In Game Five, Thurman Munson drove in five runs and Yankees went on to win four straight and capture the title. This 1978 World Series trophy was presented to a member of the Yankees front office. Just over a foot tall at the highest flag, the trophy features a gold crown atop an arc centerpiece over a silver baseball, surrounded by 26 gold flags with black lettering on stanchions, one for each Major League team. The two World Series teams' press pins are mounted on the 7" diameter black base, in front of the silver baseball. The surrounding gold band reads "World Champions, New York Yankees, 1978." There is a Balfour manufacturer's sticker underneath the base. In overall NRMT condition with minor oxidation on the top of the silver baseball and arc. Rare and highly sought after due to the popularity and history of the Yankees.
