It had been 17 years since the Mets won their first World Series title, and they were itching for another. Unlike their first appearance when they were the underdogs, the Mets entered the 1986 Fall Classic against the Boston Red Sox as the heavy favorites. The series went to seven games, thanks to the infamous error made by Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner on Mookie Wilson's grounder. On Oct. 27, 1986, the Mets clinched their second title proving they were amazin' again. This lot includes a 16" x 20" photograph of Ray Knight crossing home plate and greeting Howard Johnson during the 1986 World Series, hand-signed in blue marker by 29 members of the New York Mets of 1986. Signatures include Rick Anderson, Howard Johnson, Wally Backman, Ray Knight, Bruce Berenyi, Terry Leach, Gary Carter, Barry Lyons, Ron Darling, Dave Magadan, Lenny Dykstra, Roger McDowell, Kevin Elster, Kevin Mitchell, Sid Fernandez, Randy Niemann, George Foster, Bob Ojeda, Dwight Gooden, Bill Robinson, Ed Hearn, Tim Teufel, Danny Heep, Rafael Santana, Keith Hernandez, Doug Sisk, Davey Johnson and Mookie Wilson. Signatures grade an overall 9-10. Also included is a Rawlings official 1986 World Series baseball signed in blue ballpoint on the side panel by both Buckner and Wilson. The ball is extremely clean, with signatures grading an 8-9 (tiny smudge on the "uc" in "Buckner"). Accompanied by a LOA from Jimmy Spence of PSA/DNA and a Steiner Certificate.
