A tough competitor and on-the-field leader, THURMAN MUNSON'S first full season in pinstripes saw him win the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year Award. Munson was one of the best catchers in the major leagues during the 1970s, and a master at handling pitchers. He was first Yankee team captain since Lou Gehrig had received the title. Munson's solid play in the field and his offensive prowess at the plate led the Yankees to three consecutive World Series, and to World Championships in 1977 and 1978. In 1976, he was named the American League MVP. In 1973, Munson had a great year at the plate, hitting .301 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs. The seven-time All Star also won a Gold Glove that year, the first of three straight. Munson's career was tragically cut short in August 1979 when the plane he was flying crashed. On the inside right front waistband is the "Wilson" manufacturers tag with wash instructions and the pants size "35" on it. To the right of that is "ESPINO" in faded black marker. On the inside left front waistband is "85" in faded black marker. On the inside center back of the waistband is an additional manufacturers tag with "Munson 73 Set 1 22" in script embroidered in faded navy blue thread. The pants show good game use and appear to have no alterations of any kind. Accompanied by a Yankees Steiner letter.
