One of the best relief pitchers to throw a ball, SPARKY LYLE came out of the bullpen for the Red Sox before joining the Yankees in 1972. That season, he proceeded to lead the AL in saves, a feat he repeated in 1978. In 1977, Lyle became the first relief pitcher in MLB history to win a Cy Young Award. During his seven years with the Yankees, Lyle was named to the All Star team three times. After being worn by Lyle, these pants were sent to the Yankee minor league system where they were worn by several other players. On the inside right front waistband is the "Wilson" manufacturers tag with wash instructions and the pants size "36" on it. Adjacent to that is "56" in faded black marker. On the inside left front waistband is "69" and a crossed-out (illegible) number in black marker. To the left of that is "NORRID" in faded blue marker. On the inside center back of the waistband is an additional manufacturers tag with "Lyle 73 Set 2 25" in script embroidered in faded navy blue thread. The pants show good game use with several very small dark spot stains on back right leg. The pants appear to have no alterations of any kind. Accompanied by a Yankees Steiner letter.
