After becoming a regular in 1984, DON MATTINGLY quickly established himself as one of the star players in baseball in the 1980s. His leadership and work ethic were instrumental in New York's success during his era. Mattingly could hit for average and power, with a lifetime .307 batting average with 222 home runs and 1099 RBIs in his career. Mattingly won the AL batting title in 1984, led the league in RBIs and was named league MVP in 1985. Mattingly was also a brilliant fielder at first base, winning nine Gold Glove Awards, and leading the AL in fielding percentage three straight years (1993-95). A six-time All Star, Mattingly's back problems caused a decline in his offensive output, however he still shone in the field through the early 1990s. In 1997, the Yankees retired #23 in recognition of Mattingly's contributions and service to the team. On the left front tail of the jersey is the "Russell" manufacturers tag with wash instructions and the jersey size "44" on it. Below that is an additional manufacturers tag with "MATTINGLY 92" on it. Attached to the "Russell" tag is an additional manufacturers tag with "100% POLYESTER" on it. Across the front of the jersey is "NEW YORK." On the back of the jersey is the player number "50" which has been changed from an original player number "23." All lettering and numbering is done in navy blue on white tackle twill. The jersey shows good game use. Apart from the number change, the jersey appears to have no alterations. Accompanied by a Yankees Steiner letter.
