The 2004 Yankees won 101 games in the regular season, finishing first in the AL East. In the AL Division series, New York faced the Minnesota Twins. Under the leadership of Derek Jeter, and the play of Hideki Matsui and especially Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera, the Yanks dispatched the Twins in four games. The ALCS pitted New York against long-time rival Boston. With the first two games in Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 series lead, with Rivera saving both for wins. Game Three also was won by the Yanks in a 19-8 game, despite the Sox being at home. Game Four, also at Fenway Park was taken by Boston, as was a 2-0 victory in a Game Five pitching duel. The series returned to New York with the Yanks leading 3-2. In a close game, the Red Sox emerged with a 4-2 win to even the series. In the deciding Game Seven, the Red Sox pitchers combined to limit the Yanks to only three runs while the Boston offense tallied ten. With the victory, the Red Sox upset the Yanks to win the AL Pennant.
