The most sure-handed second baseman and dependable hitter of his era, Chas Gehringer was a fixture for the Detroit Tigers from 1924 through 1942. He had a career batting average of .320, winning the AL batting title in 1937, the same year he was awarded league MVP honors. Gehringer led the AL in fielding percentage nine times and had at least 100 RBIs in seven seasons. One of his teammates said that you just turn Gehringer on in April and he plays through October without fail, giving him his nickname the "Mechanical Man." Gehringer helped the Tigers to the AL pennant in 1934, 1935 and 1940. Named as an All-Star from 1933 to 1938, Gehringer was elected to the Baseball HoF in 1949. On the inside back collar of the jersey is a manufacturers tag (name of manufacturer has been worn off and is illegible). Below that is an additional sail cloth tag with "Gehringer" in script embroidered in red thread. Across the front of the jersey is "Detroit" in black felt letters. The jersey shows game use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
