Built on top of the Pigtown garbage dump, opened on April 9, 1913 and named after Dodgers owner Charles Ebbets, the historic ballpark in Flatbush, Brooklyn named Ebbets Field has become part of the mythology and folklore of baseball. Ebbets Field epitomizes what many feel is the "lost America," a simpler time when baseball was baseball and heroes were home grown. Forever vilified in Brooklyn hearts is Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, who moved the team to Los Angeles after the 1957 season. The beloved ballpark was demolished on February 23, 1960. This large wooden 47 1/2" diameter round sign hung outside the demolition site at Ebbets Field. It has the shape and appearance of a two-dimensional baseball, with gray border and blue "stitching." In blue letters is painted on the face, "Demolition by Harry Avirom Inc., 10-11 38' Ave. L.I.C. - RA.9-0559." There are several mounting bolt holes around the edge of this rare and historic piece, as well as some minor chipping all around. There is also some bronze colored spray paint on the face, possibly graffiti or the result of demolition action.
