Founded by pre-Gold Rush pioneers (arriving in California before 1850), The Society of California Pioneers exists today to preserve and promote California heritage. This oversized framed certificate measures 25-1/2" x 31-1/2" and was presented to pioneer Alex J. Cartwright on April 13, 1875, certifying him as a member who arrived in July 1849. Cartwright's true pioneering accomplishment was not in California, however; he, not Abner Doubleday as is widely believed, is enshrined in the Hall of Fame as the inventor of baseball. The blank certificates were made by Nahl Bros., Lithographers (San Francisco), this one has been personalized to Cartwright and has been signed by Vice President D.J. Staples (a founding member) and the Secretary Louis Lull. In tremendous condition for its age, shows minimal overall wear. This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire an item that was personally owned by the father of baseball.
