When George Steinbrenner and a group of business partners purchased the Yankees from CBS in 1973, no one really knew just how involved he would become. The former chairman of the Cleveland-based American Shipbuilding Company, Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees with no baseball experience. But his competitive nature and his background as an assistant football coach at both Purdue and Northwestern gave him all the edge he would need. Additionally, his cleverness as a businessman also helped make him a successful owner. Three years after Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees, the club made the World Series, while in 1977 the Yankees won their first of two straight titles. With Steinbrenner as owner, New York has won the World Series six times, the last coming over the Mets in 2000. George Steinbrenner has hand signed this framed March 1993 Sports Illustrated cover, which comes complete with a Steiner Sports certificate of authenticity.
