Enshrined in 1959 as a player, George Mikan was pro basketball's first superstar and the first dominating big man. In 1944, due to Mikan and fellow Hall of Famer Bob Kurland, the NCAA instituted the goaltending rule. Mikan won his first title leading DePaul to the 1945 NIT Championship. As a pro, he won the 1947 NBL title with the Chicago Gears, and then captured six more championships (one NBL, one BAA and four NBA) with the Minneapolis Lakers from 1948 through 1954. Mikan led the league in scoring three times (1949-52), in rebounding twice (1952 and 1953), and played in the first four NBA All-Star Games. George retired in 1956 with 11,764 points scored over his nine seasons. In 1967, Mikan served as the first commissioner of the ABA. He was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996.
