Contributor Abe Saperstein founded perhaps the most famous basketball team ever, the Harlem Globetrotters. The squad played its first game in 1927, and have thrilled and amused fans worldwide ever since. The team started out playing "straight," but because they consistently beat opponents by large scores, Saperstein felt that some pranks needed to be added to keep fans interested in the game. Along with their comic routines, the Globies could play with the best, defeating the Lakers in a celebrated 1940s series and capturing a World Tourney title. Saperstein also organized the short-lived American Basketball League in 1961, which was the first professional league to use a three-point shot. Silver Relief medallion. In good condition; slight scratches on nose and chin, two dimples on background caused by mounting bolts.
