Class of 1984 - Contributor Cliff Fagan became one of the sport's premier administrators beginning in 1957. He served as Executive Director, President or in other positions with the National Federation of High School Athletics, Amateur Basketball Association, U.S. Olympic Committee, FIBA Central Committee, and Pan American Basketball Association. The only coach to lead two different schools to the NCAA Final Four twice, Jack Gardner compiled 486 wins in 28 years of coaching. In his 10 seasons at Kansas, Gardner took the Jayhawks to the Final Four in 1948 and 1951. He guided Utah to the Final Four in 1961 and 1966. Class of 1985 - Known as the "Mother of Women's Basketball," Contributor Senda Berenson Abbott pioneered the sport as director of physical education at Smith College in Northampton, MA. After discussions about the sport with Dr. Naismith in nearby Springfield, Senda and her class (no male spectators were allowed) held the first game of women's basketball at Smith on March 22, 1893. Harold Anderson was one of the first college coaches to record 500 victories, at Toledo and Bowling Green. At the latter school, his teams earned six NIT and three NCAA Tournament appearances from 1942 to 1963. In 42 seasons (1927-69) coaching at Byng High School in Ada, OK, Bertha Teague compiled a 1,152-115 record. Her team competed in 22 regional, 38 conference and 40 district tournaments, and won eight state titles. Nate Thurmond joined the NBA San Francisco Warriors in 1963 after an All-America career at Bowling Green and played forward - because Wilt Chamberlain was playing center. He returned to the pivot in 1965 and developed into one of the NBA's truly dominant centers. Nate spent 14 seasons in the NBA, played in seven All-Star Games, and was named to the All-NBA Defensive Team five times. Thurmond was the first player to record a quadruple-double, when in the 1977-75 season he scored 22 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, had 13 assists and blocked 12 shots. Thurmond's 14,464 career rebounds ranks eighth all-time in the NBA. He was named as one of the league's 50 greatest players in 1996. Margaret Wade coached for 21 years in Mississippi high schools, then returned to her alma mater, Delta State, as Athletic Director in 1959. When the school re-instituted women's basketball in 1969 she became coach at age 60. Wade's DSU teams won three straight AIAW Championships (1975-77). All are Silver Relief medallions. Gardner, Berenson Abbott and Wade are in NM condition. Fagan is in very good condition; scratches on chin and lower lip. Anderson is in fair to good condition; scratches on chin, cheek, and forehead and on the background. Teague in fair condition; chipped on tip of nose and on chin. Thurmond in very good condition; one slight dimple on background caused by mounting bolts.
