Nicknamed "Popeye" for his strength, DON ZIMMER was hit in the head at the plate in 1953, resulting in four screws being inserted in his skull. He returned to the Dodgers and played in the 1955 World Series, and in 1956 he was beaned again and received a season-ending fracture. He ended his playing days in Japan before returning to coach and manage in the majors. This is Don Zimmer's 1999 NY Yankees game-issued road knit jersey. On the left front tail is the "Russell Athletic Diamond Collection" manufacturer's label with size "48." Attached is a white flag tag with material "100% Polyester." Adjacent is a white patch with "Zimmer-99." Across the front of the jersey is "New York" done in blue on white tackle twill. On the back is the coach's number "50" done in blue on white tackle twill. On the left sleeve is a number "5" done in black tackle twill, in memory of Yankees great Joe DiMaggio, who died in 1999. The jersey appears to have no alterations of any kind. Accompanied by a letter from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles.
