Born in Phoenicia in 208 AD as Gessius Bassianus Alexianus, this son of emperor Marcus Aurelius Antonius is better known as Severus Alexander and served as Roman Emperor from 222 to 235 AD. Minted in 226 AD, this silver denarius features a right-facing portrait of Severus Alexander with laureate and draped bust on the front, and standing (left) on the reverse, sacrificing over an altar. It measures approximately 11/16" in diameter. Grades Very Fine.
