United States Notes were the first permanent federal paper money issued by the U.S. government. Commonly referred to as "Legal Tenders" because of their stated payment obligation, these notes were issued in ten Series', with this Chittenden-Spinner note being issued in the first (1862 - Civil War) Series. Featuring a portrait of Alexander Hamilton with an allegorical figure on the left representing "freedom," these notes are overprinted with a small red seal on the right and red serial numbers. Note shows wear and small tears, grades Good.
