Two vintage $100 currency notes from the Confederate States of America (South Carolina), from 1862 (blank back) and 1864 ("blueback"). Confederate money, printed in Columbia, South Carolina (also produced by some states such as Virginia and Georgia), was backed by cotton, as the South was the largest producer in the world at the time. By the end of the war, these notes were practically worthless as the Union blockade had effectively devalued the currency's basis. The 1862 note features a portrait of John C. Calhoun on the left, a center vignette of slaves working in a cotton field and a vignette on the right of "Columbia." The 1864 note features a portrait of Lucy Pickens in the center and a portrait of George Randolph on the right, with a vignette on the left of Confederate soldiers. These notes both grade Almost Uncirculated / Uncirculated.
1862 & 1864 $100 Confederate Notes (Uncirculated) (2)
