Pegasus' history with Mobil began with the Vacuum Oil Company and the Standard Oil Company of New York, companies that were originally part of the Standard Oil Trust and would one day merge to form Exxon-Mobil. Standard Oil began using the Pegasus design to identify their fuels worldwide in the late 19th Century. Once Standard was broken up, the newly independent Vacuum Oil Company trademarked a white Pegasus for gasoline advertising in South Africa. Concurrently, the Standard Oil Company of New York advertised with a red Pegasus in the Far East. When these two companies merged in the 1930s, a new Pegasus was commissioned for representation worldwide. In 1954 the brand name "Mobil" was adopted and hitched to the famous horse, represented by this beautiful original porcelain "Pegasus" sign, which measures 35" x 46" and is in overall NRMT-MINT condition. Dating to the 1950s, the sign has been professionally restored with brilliant red paint with white accents. There are two metal brackets attached to the underside for easy mounting. The current form of Pegasus was redrawn in 1965 with bolder lines and the direction reversed from that shown in this sign.
