The name "Lou Gehrig" evokes deep nostalgic memories and fondness in the heart of Yankee fans, young and old alike. Taking over the reigns of Yankee superstar from Babe Ruth, who had overshadowed him while they were teammates, Gehrig remained remarkably humble and modest for a man of his stature. A true American hero, his early death made him a legend. Few who have seen or heard his farewell speech in 1939 have not been touched by the immortal words of the Iron Horse, who declared himself "The luckiest man on the face of the earth." Winner of the 1934 Triple Crown, Gehrig still holds the American League record for most RBIs in a season (184 in 1931) and most career grand slams (23). His most famous record, however, is the 2,130 consecutive games streak. So loved was he that when his number was retired, the event was the first of its kind in any sport. A magnificent example of a single-signed Lou Gehrig ball, this cream colored red and blue stitched Special League baseball is single-signed in vibrant brown fountain pen on the sweet spot by Lou Gehrig. A true rarity on the want list of many a great collection, as Gehrig predominantly signed the side panel. There appear to be some minor abrasions on the ball, with a tiny scuff on the lower left part of the "L" in "Lou." On the side panel in black ink is a date "6/10/38" and a drawing of what appears to be a pennant, not in Gehrig's hand. The Yankees did play in Yankee Stadium on 6/10/38, defeating the Indians 8-2, and they did win the pennant and World Series in 1938 as well. Gehrig's bold signature grades a strong 8 and is one of nicest we have ever seen. As significant as a Ruth single signed ball, a Gehrig raises any collection to the next level. Accompanied by LOAs from James Spence Authentication and from Mike Guttierez Authentication (Mr. Guttierez is presently with PSA/DNA).
