Bowie Kuhn was elected commissioner on of Major League Baseball Feb. 4, 1969 and served until Sept. 30, 1984. He will most likely be remembered for keeping Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle out of baseball for their employment with casinos. He handed down one year suspensions of several players for drug involvement and baseball enjoyed unprecedented attendance and television contracts during his reign. In 1985, The Sporting News gave him the Pioneer Award for his lifetime of dedication to the game of baseball. The award measures 11-3/4" x 7-3/4" x 4" deep and weighs 8 pounds. The top half is clear lucite and the bottom is a heavy black base. The clear portion contains a 4" disc with The Sporting News logo. There is a 4" x 7-3/4" plaque at the base that reads "BOWIE KUHN 1985 PIONEER AWARD". This piece is in overall excellent condition and only has light scuffing on the left side.
