Born in 204 A.D. near Damascus, Marcus Philippus became emperor in 244 A.D and reigned until his death in 249 A.D. Measuring 7/8" in diameter, this silver coin is in the "antoninianus" or "double dinarii" denomination, distinguished by the use of a radiate crown on the front portrait as opposed to the traditional laurel wreath. Minted early in his reign, circa 245 A.D., the coin celebrates Philip returning to Rome from the east to become emperor. On the reverse is Philip on horseback, holding a spear and raising his right hand. Slabbed and graded AU 50 (high grade).
