Born in 204 A.D. near Damascus, Marcus Philippus became emperor in 244 A.D and reigned until his death in 249 A.D. Measuring 7/8" in diameter, this silver coin is in the "antoninianus" or "double dinarii" denomination, distinguished by the use of a radiate crown on the front portrait as opposed to the traditional laurel wreath. Minted during the middle of his reign, on the reverse is a figure with sceptre and globe. Slabbed and graded AU 55 (high grade).
