Vintage $5 currency note from the Confederate States of America (Richmond, Virginia), from 1861 (blank back). Confederate money, printed primarily in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia, was backed by cotton, as the South was the largest producer in the world at the time. By the end of the war, these notes were practically worthless as the Union blockade had effectively devalued the currency's basis. This 1861 note features a vignette of a sailor with cotton bales on the front center, Christopher Memminger (CSA cabinet member) on the left and "Justice and Ceres" on the right.
