Commonly referred to as "Legal Tenders" because of the their stated payment obligation, these notes were issued in eight Series', with this rare Vernon-Treat note being issued in the seventh (1901) Series. This Series, commonly known as the "Bison" or "Buffalo" Series, features a complete redesign from previous notes, with an American Bison in the center, flanked by Lewis and Clark on the left and right side. The notes are overprinted with a small red scalloped seal on the right and a large red decorative "X" on the left. A rare and very popular note!
