Unique collection of documents, framed photo, cabinet photos, poems, news clippings, letters and the like, written by and belonging to John Wolcott Phelps and his son. Phelps (1813-1885) was a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War, though he resigned in 1862, and went on to become not only a well known author but also a Presidential Candidate for the American Party in 1880. During the Civil War he issued a proclamation abolishing slavery long before Lincoln did. One of the most significant documents in this collection is Phelps' 1836 officer's appointment upon graduating from West Point. The lot is in overall EX condition, the paper shows obvious yellowing with age but the writing is clear and legible.
