Established in the 1850s and continuing through the Carter Administration, the U.S. Assay Office was, as its name indicated, a statutory organization controlling the purity testing of precious metals. The Assay Office guarantees that the metal has been independently tested and that it conforms to the legal standards of precious metal content, known as the "fineness." This bar of solid silver weighs 100 troy ounces and is stamped "999+ Fine Silver 100 Troy Oz., Contains Silver Formerly Stores At U.S. Assay Office, San Francisco Or New York" with eight stamped stars and "CC" hallmark. Light scratching overall.
