One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever step out on the gridiron, Johnny Unitas (deceased) led the Colts on two 80-yard drives to beat the New York Giants 23-17 in the 1958 title game, which many consider to be the greatest pro football game ever played. After 17 seasons with the Baltimore Colts, he retired in 1973 after one year with the San Diego Chargers, having amassed 22 NFL records to his name. He was the first quarterback to throw for more than 40,000 yards, despite playing during an era when NFL teams played shorter seasons of 12 or 14 games He also threw a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games between 1956 and 1960, a record that still stands today. At the time of his retirement he held the record for most touchdowns (290) and most 300-yard games (26). He led the Colts to one Super Bowl Championship and three NFL championships, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. This Riddell San Diego Chargers helmet has the "Chargers Bolts" blue and yellow vinyl logo stickers on each side. On the right side is the player number "19" in black vinyl numbers. On the back of the helmet in raised stamped black lettering is "Riddell Inc." and "KRA-LITE-8, Made in U.S.A." On the inside back is the Riddell manufacturer's label, above the inside left ear hole is the Riddell "TK-2" Style / "C72" Code sticker. Stamped in black on the webbing is the size "7-1/4" and the number "2." The helmet has the original interior web suspension, aero-cell padding, leather ear pads and face mask (sans chin strap), and exhibits tremendous use with perspiration staining on the inside and deep gouges and abrasions on the outer shell. Johnny Unitas has signed this helmet in black marker above the player number "19," and added the inscription "Its a gamer." Signature and inscription grade a 7 to 8.
