The "Mayor's Trophy Game" was an annual showcase exhibition game between New York baseball teams for the mythical title as champions of New York baseball, back when non-World Series games between teams from the two leagues were special events to look forward to in the days before interleague play. The tradition is alleged to have started in 1910 when the Giants finished second in the NL and the Highlanders finished second in the ; the Highlanders challenged the Giants to a "City Series" and the Giants prevailed, 4 games to 2 with Christy Mathewson pitching 3 wins. Another such series was reportedly played in 1914. Later, the "Mayor's Trophy Game" was inaugurated as a mid-summer diversion. Quite a tradition at the time, it was still being played in the 1950s before the Giants and Dodgers moved to the west coast. The proceeds went to sandlot baseball leagues in New York City. Later, the Mayor's Trophy Game was also played between the Yankees and Mets beginning in 1962 and played through the late 1980s. This wooden trophy measures 23" long x 22" tall x 10" at its deepest. The back tower is capped by a silver baseball, below which is engraved on brass "Mayor's Trophy, Giants vs Yankees, Annual Series," below which are mounted two laureated crossed bats. On the front base is a brass plaque engraved "1945 - (Mayor William O'Dwyer) - Yankees, 1947 - (Mayor William O'Dwyer) - Series Tied, 1948 - (Mayor William O'Dwyer) - Yankees." To the right of this plaque is mounted a metal gold-colored baseball base, to the left is a metal gold-colored baseball player, who has broken off at the foot. The bottom of the base shows remnants of green felt. Overall EXMT condition with light wear, with the exception of the player who is no longer attached.
