16mm reel entitled "News Thrills of 1939," silent, black and white, stamped "VAPORATE" on the beginning of the reel. 1939 marked the beginning of WWII in Europe as Germany invaded Poland, DDT was discovered as an insecticide and the Yankees swept the Reds in the World Series. On July 4, 1939, the New York Yankees announced Lou Gehrig's retirement and proclaimed "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day" at Yankee Stadium. Between games of the Independence Day doubleheader against the Washington Senators, the poignant ceremonies were held on the diamond, where Gehrig gave his famous "Luckiest Man on the face of the Earth" speech, which is the highlight of this reel. Comes with original tin, appears to be in overall EXMT condition.
