Larry Bird had a Hall of Fame career with the Boston Celtics. It all began for him at Indiana State where he led the Sycamores to the NCAA championship game in 1979, his senior year. He was matched up, as he would be for years to come, against Earvin Johnson of the Michigan State Spartans. The Sycamores finished that season 33-1 with Bird winning the USBWA College Player of the Year, Naismith and Wooden awards. After his three seasons at Indiana State, he left as the fifth highest scorer in NCAA history. He finished his collegiate career with an average of 30.3 points per game. On the left front tail of the home knit jersey is the “Sand-Knit” manufacturers tag with jersey size “42” and wash instructions. Across the front is “INDIANA STATE.” Player number “33” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in light blue on navy blue tackle twill. Inside the rear waistband of the shorts is the “Rawlings” manufacturers tag with size “40.” Adjacent is a “McMillan Sports” tag and a wash instructions tag with player number “33” written in black marker. Player number “33” is written a second time in black marker on the waistband adjacent to the wash tag. The inner drawstring is intact. There are small red stains on front which appear to be blood. The uniform shows good game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a letter stating this uniform was worn by Bird during his Sophomore season at Indiana State. The letter is from a former Indiana State Police Officer assigned to campus patrol. It states that he broke up a fight in January of 1978 just off campus involving some prominent members of the IU Athletic Department. It states, in part, “In saving these members a great deal of publicity and embarrassment...I was anonymously sent this uniform by an unknown third party...There is absolutely no question as to the authenticity of this complete outfit. Larry Bird wore this particular uniform at home games during his sophomore year at Indiana State University.”
