Oscar Robertson was an all-around player in the true sense of the word. During the 1961-62 NBA season, "The Big O" averaged a triple-double for the season, with 30.8 points, 12.5, rebounds, and 11.4 assists on the year. This is one of the most remarkable records in the history of sports as no one else has ever done this. Oscar was a fantastic scorer and playmaker averaging over 30 points a game in six of his fourteen seasons in the NBA. Robertson was an innovator; at 6'5" he was the first big guard. In his rookie year, he scored 30.5 points per game and received Rookie of the Year honors. His next season is when he averaged a triple-double and he led the Royals to the playoffs for the next five years following. Robertson was the second pick in the 1960 draft. After a rough childhood in which he was too poor to own a basketball, he signed for $33,000 a year and the rest is history. On the front left tail of this jersey is the "Wilson" manufacturer's tag. Attached is a size tag with "44." Across the front is the team name "ROYALS." Below and on the back is the player number "14." Across the back is player name "ROBERTSON." All lettering and numbering is done in blue on red tackle twill. Inside the rear waistband of the shorts is the “MacGregor” size 36 manufacturers tag. Attached is the "Ed Brendamour Inc. Sporting Goods" distributor's tag. “36” is written on the waistband in black marker, representing the shorts size. The uniform shows excellent game-use with multiple rips and tears, proof as to how elusive this nimble man was to guard, and to how few jerseys these hardnosed players got in the early days of the NBA. It appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a LOA from our consignor who purchased this very uniform back in 1968 at a Charity Auction in Bethesda, MD for a whopping $32.00. As he writes, “It took every penny I had to buy the uniform, not as an investment, just because I liked Oscar.” Wow!
