The New York Yankees’ 1961 season was the 59th season for the Yankees. The team finished with a record of 109-53, and won their 26th American League pennant. In the World Series, they defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 5 games. The 1961 season was notable for the race between center fielder Mickey Mantle and right fielder Roger Maris to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season (set in 1927). Maris eventually broke the record, hitting his 61st home run on October 1, the season's final day. On the front left tail is the "RAWLINGS" manufacturers size 42 tag. Below that is "61 Set 2" in navy blue stitch. In the back of the collar is the “GARDNER” felt strip tag with navy blue chain stitch. On the left chest is the "NY" interlocked logo which has been restored. On the back is the player number "12” which has been restored. All lettering and numbering is done in navy blue felt. A patch has been removed from the left sleeve. The jersey shows game-use and besides the restorations appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
