The "Say Hey Kid" was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Mays won two MVP awards and tied a record with twenty-four appearances in the All-Star Game. He ended his career with 660 career home runs, third at the time of his retirement, and is currently fourth all-time. Many consider him to be the greatest all-around player of all-time. According to Dobbins, at the end of the 1971 season, new jerseys were ordered for the Playoffs. The jerseys were tagged for 1972. Because of time constraints there were no names in the collars. Then someone altered the jersey by moving the “Wilson” tag and putting a name in the collar. Jersey was sold by Dick Dobbins with this information. Later on someone restored the jersey back to the original condition. There is a long detailed letter from San Francisco Giants expert, Dick Dobbins stating the history of this shirt and its alterations. In the back inside collar is the “Wilson” manufacturers size 42 tag with wash instructions. On the front left tail is “72” in black chain stitch directly on the jersey. Across the front is “GIANTS” in black on orange tackle twill. On back is the player number “24” in the same tackle twill. Autographed on front and back in black marker and rates an 8. The jersey shows game-use and besides the alterations mentioned above appears to have no other alterations of any kind. The autograph is accompanied by a LOA from JSA. Accompanied by a detailed LOA from Dick Dobbins explaining the alterations.
