This 1879 stock certificate represented one share in the Boston Base Ball Association, whose team at that time was named the Boston Red Caps (soon to be the Boston Beaneaters). The two-sided certificate is numbered “83” and dated February 3, 1879, a year in which the Red Caps finished in second place behind the Providence Grays. It is signed by Boston Base Ball Association President Arthur Soden, who was credited with inventing the reserve clause, which solidified athlete playing commitments to professional teams. The certificate is in EX overall condition, with slight wear around the edges. Also comes with an additional stock receipt from 1879.
