Joe Namath did not create football's Super Bowl, but he did make it into a real game; a showpiece, an honest-to-goodness championship game. It also made a legend out of Namath. The first two NFL Championships (they weren't even called Super bowls at that time) were post season games between the NFL and AFL champions. They weren't very good games and none gave the AFL much chance of winning. But the third game in 1969 had Namath as the quarterback of the AFL's New York Jets. When "Broadway Joe" and the 19 point underdog Jets beat the NFL's Baltimore Colts by a score of 16-7, the AFL suddenly was a challenger and Namath was chosen MVP of the game. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1985 after a great professional career playing on two very bad knees. On the front left tail is the "CHAMPION" manufacturers tag size "L" tag with wash instructions. On the front and back is the player number "12" in white screen print. On each sleeve is the player number "12" in green screen print. Across the back is the player name "NAMATH" in white screen print directly on back. The jersey shows moderate quarterback game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. Includes letter of provenance showing jersey originated from New York Jets owner Phil Iselin.
