In 1968, Gil Hodges was brought back to manage the perennially woeful Mets, and while the team only posted a 73-89 record it was nonetheless the best mark in their seven-year existence. In 1969, he led the "Miracle Mets" to the World Series championship, defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles; after losing Game 1, they came back for four straight victories, including two by 2-1 scores. Finishing higher than ninth place for the first time, the Mets became not only the first expansion team to win the Series, but also the first team ever to win the Series after finishing at least 15 games under .500 the previous year. Hodges was named The Sporting News' Manager of the Year. On the left front tail of the road flannel jersey is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “44”. Inside the rear collar is a grey strip tag with “14-44-1971” done in blue chain stitch indicating the manager’s number, jersey size and year, respectively. Across the front is “NEW YORK”. Manager’s number “14” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on orange tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the team embroidered disc patch. Inside the waistband on the flannel road pants is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and size “36”. Adjacent is a grey strip tag with “14-36-1971” done in blue chain stitch indicating manager’s number, pants size and year, respectively. The uniform shows wear and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
