Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer used this uniform in exhibition games during his 3 years of service in the navy. Gehringer volunteered for duty in 1942 and rose to the rank of Lt. Commander. During the war, benefit games were held to raise funds for worthy causes and help boost citizen’s morale. Inside the rear collar of this heavy grey flannel jersey is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag. Attached is the size “44” flag tag. Across the front is “US ALL STARS”. Player number “25” appears on back. All numbers and letters are done in blue felt. Inside the front buttons of the grey flannel pants is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with attached size “38” flag tag. The belt is intact. The uniform shows light wear and appears to have no alterations of any kind. It is accompanied by a hand written response from Mrs. Gehringer to a previous owner wherein she states “Charlie wore this uniform when he went to Japan in 1934”. We believe the jersey NOT to be from that tour but rather from the 1940’s, during Gehringer’s WW II service days.
World War II Era Worn Service Flannel Uniform Attributed to Charlie Gehringer (2) (Family Provenance)
