The NY Mets wore flannel jerseys during the regular season until 1971 and in spring training in 1972. They began the regular season of 1972 wearing knit jerseys. This jersey is tagged “1971”. It was made for Ron Swoboda to be worn in 1971. He wore number “4” and was traded to Montreal after the 1970 season. This shirt was then possibly worn by newly acquired Rusty Staub of the NY Mets in spring training of 1972 before they switched to knit jerseys for the regular season. There was no number “4” on the Mets roster in 1971 which was the uniform number Staub wore as a Met from 1972-74 until he switched to “10” in 1975. On the left front tail is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “44”. Inside the rear collar is a grey felt strip tag with “4-44-71 Set 1” indicating player number, jersey size, year of manufacture and set, respectively. Although the size is “44” the shirt measures larger to a “46”. Across the front is “NEW YORK”. Player number “4” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on orange tackle twill. The jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion, shows light use.
