In 1988, Orel Hershiser put together what is arguably one of the best single seasons in pitching history. Hershiser’s 23-8 record was best in the majors along with his totals for innings pitched (267), and complete games (15). Orel finished up the season with a record-breaking 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, a mark previously held by former Dodger and Hall of Famer, Don Drysdale. Hershiser’s astounding numbers made him the clear-cut winner of the National League Cy Young Award and he also won his first Gold Glove for his performance in the field. “Bulldog” earned the nickname given to him by manager Tommy LaSorda with his continued his dominance in the postseason. Against the Mets in the 1988 National League Championship Series, Hershiser made four outstanding appearances. He started Game 1 and Game 3, recorded the final out for the save in Game 4, and threw a complete game shutout in Game 7 to send the Dodgers to the World Series. He was named MVP of the NLCS but he wasn’t through yet. Hershiser capped off his historic season in the World Series by pitching a shutout in Game 2 and allowing two runs in a complete game series-clinching victory in Game 5. He was named the World Series MVP and is the only player in MLB history to receive the Cy Young award, the Championship Series MVP award, and the World Series MVP award in the same season. This massive trophy stands 22” tall and weighs in at 32 pounds. It was presented to starting pitcher Orel Hershiser after he was selected as the MVP of the 1988 World Series. Nine flagpoles adorn the top of the trophy, two of the nine flags are missing. A silver-plated baseball also sits atop the trophy above a “1988” plaque. A second plaque on the middle tier reads “SPORT MAGAZINE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD 1988 WORLD SERIES”. A third plaque on the base reads “OREL LEONARD HERSHISER IV - LOS ANGELES DODGERS”. The trophy is in EX condition and is accompanied by a LOA from Orel Hershiser. This item will require extra shipping and handling costs due to its weight and size.
